Syma X8G – The low-cost alternative to GoPro

Here we are, once again reviewing another great drone for casual photography and videography purposes. We are talking about the large quadcopter Syma X8G, Syma’s drone aimed at enthusiasts looking for a powerful massive drone capable of carrying a Syma action camera (included) or other similar action cameras. Syma is one of the most recognizable toy drones brands in the market, having produced very successful products. Syma X8 is a good example of this, with many different model versions, Syma X8G was Syma’s first large drone aimed at carrying an above average quality camera.

Syma X8G is a toy drone preferable for beginners and enthusiasts looking for the right affordable drone to carry their action camera. Easy to control, smooth hovering. Let us find out more about Syma X8G features and specifications! As always it is our priority to bring you the most informative drone reviews, here at Drones World!

Syma X8G Material, Size, and Motors

Syma X8G is a robust and large quadcopter of 50 x 50 x 19 cm. It is made of lightweight and somewhat durable material: ABS Plastic. Both the frame, propellers, landing gear and the protection gear around the props and the motors. It has four powerful brushed motors. Despite being one of the heaviest toy drones (1,6kg), it is capable of carrying a Syma action camera. It includes a protection case (a mount) for the Syma camera. Protection case allows the camera to be firmly fixed while still being protected from hard crashes. The complete Syma X8G package includes all the parts, plus extra: prop locks, propellers, prop locks, covers, screwdriver. A full complete package with all you need to replace parts in case something breaks.

Syma Camera

Syma X8G, as previously mentioned, is aimed at photography and videography purposes. Therefore it includes its own camera and mount. Syma X8G comes in three different package versions, one without the camera, another with a 5MP and a third with an 8MP camera. This low-cost action camera developed by Syma itself is somewhat of a very inexpensive GoPro for a toy drone. High Definition with a 1080p resolution, it records at 60 frames per second or 30fps. The camera is safely placed in a case protection mount. Although not highly-durable, it will resist most crashes and hits, efficiently protecting the camera from any damage.

Syma X8G camera doesn’t use a battery. Instead, it is connected to the quadcopter through a cable. This means the camera is powered by Syma X8G itself and can not be used on any other drone or device. Obviously, you can choose to fly without camera and mount, decreasing the drone’s weight and increasing flight time (also because the camera also uses the same battery that powers the drone). It is also important to mention that battery is charged via USB, meaning you can plug in your battery to the computer and quickly charge it (USB cable is included). On top of all this, Syma X8G complete package also includes a 4GB Micro-SD card which is placed directly in the camera to record the videos and image files. A very useful extra by Syma.

Flight Time and Control Range of Syma X8G

Syma X8G has one of the best flight times for drones within this price range. Powered by a 7.4 voltage 2000mAh lipo battery, Syma X8G’s flight time varies between 10 to 12 minutes. Flight time always depends on how much weight Syma X8G is carrying and if the camera is being used or not since they share the same 7.4V 2000mAh lipo battery. Syma X8G is controlled by a 6 channel 2.4 Ghz remote controller (also included in the package), which allows a control distance of up to 100 meters. 100 meters is the average control range for drones within this price range and is enough to enjoy the most of your drone. Take it to a park, beach, or even fly it indoors, Syma X8G has a very nice hover and decent control range.

Syma X8G Features

Syma X8G most important characteristics rely on its camera and specifications, not on the features. Although Syma still managed to include Headless Mode on this model. Headless Mode is useful for beginners, as it enables the drone to turn right or left accordingly (despite where the front of the quadcopter is pointing to). Headless Mode is a very common feature among toy drones, it’s very useful, one would almost say necessary. Besides Headless Mode, Syma X8G also features 360º aerial spin (just through the push of a button on the remote controller). However, I wouldn’t advise you to perform this stunt many times in a row. Due to a weight of the quadcopter (1600 grams), if you perform too many 360º it may overheat the motors and consequently, they will burn. Stick to do the stunt two or three times per flight. Besides this, Syma X8G also features LED lights for night flights, so you won’t lose track of your drone.

Overall Syma X8G is one of the best large quadcopters to anyone looking for an excellent image quality camera drone. Aimed at beginners and amateur photography and videography. Syma X8G hovers very well, fights the wind, is easy to fly, fabulous fit for every beginner looking for a camera drone for a very affordable price. In my opinion, it is one of the best drones produced by Syma.

THE GOOD Syma X8G has one of the best action cameras included with low-cost toy drones. You can choose from a HD 8MP 1080p 60fps or a 5MP 720p 30fps. Syma X8G also comes with a protective mount to hold the camera. Syma X8G has a control distance of 100 meters and a flight time of up to 12 minutes. Syma X8G is also very easy to control, good fit for beginners. On top of all this, it comes with a complete package ready to fly out of the box.
THE BAD Syma X8G is somewhat of a heavy drone, weighting 1600 grams. It doesn’t have many features; it would have been interesting if it included One Key Return and Barometer Set Height.
BOTTOM LINE Overall, if you are on a low budget, but are looking for an above average toy camera drone, than Syma X8G is definitely one of your best options. We recommend this quadcopter to anyone looking for a complete camera drone package for a very affordable price.
